Africa-Press – Angola. Agostinho Calemba, 56 years old, chief of the town of Chitato, outskirts of the city of Dundo, municipality of Chitato and Alfredo Cazanguie, a 54-year-old peasant from the same district, are two of several citizens of Lunda-Norte who go through the fifth time to the polls to exercise civic duty.
Both consider themselves privileged citizens, due to the fact that they are linked to the history of all the electoral cycles of the country and guarantee to be living sources, to transmit to other generations of Angolans the importance of each citizen participating in the party of democracy, with tolerance and respect for the institutions.
Agostinho Calemba, one of the traditional authorities of the municipality of Chitato told that he wants to be an example for future generations about the civic duty of a citizen. He defended that the political actors that run for the elections of 24th of August, should develop their activities remembering that the national interest is above all, hence the need for the observance of civility.
The soba’s appeal goes in the direction of the leaders and militants of the eight competing political formations, to have a serene posture during the entire electoral process, respecting the people’s decision. Agostinho Calemba believes that because Angola is heading for the fifth elections, the country’s politicians are already mature enough to assume that only the people choose the future leader of the nation.
In 1992, when the first elections were held, the soba Agostinho Calemba was 26 years old and at the time the climate was one of uncertainty and anxiety, both for politicians and citizens, as the Nation began to enter a new it was in terms of strengthening democracy and its institutions.
“I was 26 years old in 1992, I already had the voter card, but I remember that everyone was afraid because the idea that many passed on was that none of the candidates would accept the result that favors another competitor”, he said, before acknowledging that Today, Angolan politicians demonstrate that they have grown a lot with the mistakes of the past.
Agostinho Calemba guaranteed that he has been carrying out awareness-raising actions with the community in the sense of citizens over eighteen years of age who updated the data for the 24th of August, to exercise their civic duty. In turn, Alfredo Cazanguie, a peasant from the municipality of Chitato, told that the first time he voted in 1992, he was 24 years old, and when he successively fulfilled his civic duty in the 2008, 2012, 2017 and being now ready to do so for the fifth occasion, he considers it a privilege.
Alfredo Cazanguie stated that, with all this journey and judging by previous experiences, he believes that Angolan politicians are, from a civic point of view, prepared for the country to carry out peaceful elections, for the well-being of all and to serve as an example for others.
He defended that everyone should remember that Angola has already gone through difficult moments in its history and now, attention has to be turned to the future of a nation that still has a long way to go.
