At a time when there are still six days left for the closing of registrations for the entrance exams to the José Eduardo dos Santos University (UJES), the institution already had, as of Monday, 10,485 applicants, when only 1,135 places are available, he informed, yesterday, at a press conference, the dean Virgínia Quartin.

The manager explained that among the total number of vacancies, 70 are available at the Faculty of Agrarian Sciences, of which 35 are for the Agronomy course and 35 for Forest Engineering.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has 85 vacancies, 55 for the Veterinary course and 30 for Aquaculture. There are 65 vacancies for the Faculty of Medicine.

The faculties of Law and Economics have regular and after-work courses. In the first institution there are 120 vacancies, 60 for the regular course and the same number for after-work. At the Faculty of Economics, 220 places are available: 100 for the regular course and 120 for the after-work.

The Instituto Politécnico do Huambo has the largest number of vacancies, 575, which will be distributed among the institution’s nine courses. Nursing was awarded with 130 vacancies, 60 for the regular course and 70 for the after-work. The Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering course has 110 vacancies, of which 40 are for the regular course and 70 for the post-work period. For the Architecture and Electromedicine courses, 30 and 40 places are reserved, respectively.

According to Virgínia Quartin, the Civil Construction Engineering course had 35 vacancies; the same number assigned to Hydraulic Engineering. For Informatics, 110 places are up for grabs, 40 of which are in the regular course and 70 in the after-work period. Mechanical Engineering has 35 vacancies, while the Clinical Laboratory course has 50.

The dean of UJES admitted that the number of vacancies is still not satisfactory. Virgínia Quartin defended that alternatives be found so that there are more vacancies in the coming academic years, depending on the demand that is registered. The alternatives, she said, must also involve increasing the number of teachers and building more quality infrastructure. The UJES has 378 professors, of which only 181 are permanent.

Enrollment, in progress since the 1st of this month, ends on the 22nd, while the entrance exams will take place from the 29th of August to the 2nd of September. The official opening of the academic year is scheduled for 29 September and the effective start of classes for 1 October.
