Africa-Press – Angola. The construction works of the Deepwater Port of Caio, in Cabinda, will now be faster, with the start of the dredging process of the access channel and the quay’s maneuvering basin.
The dredging process is being carried out by a dredger incorporated into a monstrous ship, belonging to the company “Draimair”, hired by the construction company of the Port of Águas Selvagem do Caio, CRBC of Chinese origin.
According to the press, with the supervisory body of the work, the access channel will be 15.7 meters deep while the port’s maneuver basin will be 14 meters deep.
The ship has a dredging capacity of 2,400 square meters per hour and the sand it is removing from the seabed is being placed and then compacted in an area of approximately 400,000 square meters, where, according to the creators of the project, will serve to implement all the port’s operational infrastructures.
The launch of the two-month dredging work was witnessed by senior members of the provincial government, with emphasis on the deputy governors for the Political and Social sector, Miguel dos Santos de Oliveira, from Technical and Infrastructure Services. Guilherme Pereira, members of the Board of Directors of the Port of Cabinda and traditional authorities of the host municipality (Cabinda).
The chairman of the Board of Directors of the Port of Cabinda, José Kuvingua, considered the beginning of the dredging process to be an important milestone in the development of the project, since, he reinforced, with the arrival of the dredger, “it has accelerated to a certain extent the work that by itself, has already had a certain increase since the beginning of this year”.
“The dredger came to clean the funds, that is, to remove unnecessary material for the silting of the future terminal installation area”, said the manager.
According to the PCA of the Port of Cabinda, with the dredging process, the conditions are thus created for the normal and regular progress of the construction works of the Port of Deep Waters of Caio, on the one hand, and on the other, the certainty of that the works will be completed on the scheduled date, that is, in December 2024.
In terms of the physical execution of the project, José Kuvingua, informed that the works are going around just over 35 percent. “This execution margin, despite being small, but we must remember that, it is a great work”, said the PCA of the Port of Cabinda, to remember that, the percentage announced above, has already allowed the execution of several works, including the “sauce of access with just over two kilometers, including the branch that will constitute the part of the terminal with one thousand and two hundred and fifty kilometers”.
José Kuvingua reiterated that the parties, both the project proponent (government) and the contractor, are complying with all the recommended steps, reiterating that “the arrival of the dredger clearly demonstrates this fact”, he noted.
