Africa-Press – Angola. A delegation from the Angolan Association of Publishers and School Books (ASSAELE) represents Angola at the 74th edition of the Frankfurt Book Fair, which starts today and ends on Sunday, in that German city.

Interaction with other publishers to gather other experiences and the presentation of national production are the main objectives of the national delegation, which left the country’s capital on Monday.

With great expectations, the spokeswoman said that “we intend to represent the country in a big way in this return of the fair two years later, due to Covid-19”.

Authors such as John Bella, David Capelenguenha, Kanguimbu Ananás, Cremilda de Lima, António Pompilio, Elsa Braber, Lopito Feijóo, Óscar Ribas, António Jacinto, among others, will have their works in collections of children’s stories and mandatory literature.

ASSAELE ‘s main objective is to safeguard the interests and independence of associated school book publishers operating in Portugal. It has played a very important role in the equitable distribution of manuals by the various publishers, ensuring and ensuring high quality teaching materials in a timely manner.

More than 4,000 exhibitors are expected to register for the 74th edition to be the “reference event”, according to Juergen Boos, CEO of the fair, who in statements to the local press, said “we are the main fair of the book industry, it is much more than just a place to do business. The fair defends diversity, plurality and is against any type of discrimination”.

These core values are visible in this year’s program of events: many of our guests are writers whose books seek answers to current political and social questions. Names such as Mohsin Hamid, Nobel laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah, climate activist Luísa Neubauer, Spanish essayist Irene Vallejo, Ukrainian writer Serhij Zhadan, and Moroccan Leïla Slimani are part of the extensive list of confirmed authors.

The event has 2022, the participation of the main publishing groups in the world such as Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, Hachette, Scholastic, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Ingram, Taylor & Francis, Springer Nature, Holtzbrinck, among others.

The world’s leading book market fair opened its doors for the first time on September 18, 1949, at the height of Germany’s economic restructuring. It had more than 200 exhibitors and lasted seven days with more than 15 thousand visitors. In 1953, the number of foreign participants was already higher than the Germans, which made the Frankfurt Book Fair, a city considered the book capital since the time of Gutenberg, but at the time, for political reasons, Leipzig hosted a book festival.

Since the time of Gutenberg, Frankfurt has been considered the European book capital. Even so, for political reasons, the book fair, which traditionally took place in this city, was moved in the 18th century to Leipzig, in the east of the country.

With the end of the Second World War and the division of Germany, in 1949 Frankfurt was once again established as the headquarters of the great cultural event.
