Africa-Press – Angola. Brazilian writer Silviano Santiago is the winner of the Camões Prize 2022, announced yesterday, the Portuguese Minister of Culture, Pedro Adão e Silva.
Silviano Santiago, 86 years old, was born in Minas Gerais and his main works are “Em Liberdade”, “Uma História de Família” and “Keith Jarret no Blue Note”.
Last year, the Camões Prize was awarded to the Mozambican writer Paulina Chiziane, author of “Balada de Amor ao Vento” and “Ventos do Apocalipse”.
The Camões Prize for Literature in Portuguese Language was established by Portugal and Brazil, with the aim of distinguishing an author “whose work contributes to the projection and recognition of the literary and cultural heritage of the common language”.
According to the text of the Constituent Protocol, signed in Brasília, on June 22, 1988, and published in November of the same year, the prize annually recognizes “a Portuguese-speaking author who, due to the intrinsic value of his work, has contributed to the enrichment of the literary and cultural heritage of the common language”.
It was awarded for the first time, in 1989, to the writer Miguel Torga.
Brazil leads the list of winners of the Camões Prize, with 14 winners, followed by Portugal, with 13 laureates, Mozambique, with three, Cape Verde, with two, plus an Angolan author and another Portuguese-Angolan author.
The history of the award has only one refusal, precisely that of the Portuguese-Angolan Luandino Vieira, in 2006.
