Africa-Press – Angola. Angola participates, thursday until Friday, in the 24th meeting of the Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) through the diplomatic representation in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and by staff of the Ministry of Energy and Water, via virtual.
According to a press release from the Embassy of Angola in the UAE sent to Jornal de Angola Online, the Angolan delegation to the event, which brings together more than 400 delegates from 108 countries, representatives of their respective States accredited in the United Arab Emirates, is headed by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Angola in this Arab country, Albino Malungo.
The event discusses important topics such as the global energy transition and is a prelude to the 11th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), which will take place in January 2023, in Abu Dhabi, in which an Angolan ministerial delegation is expected to participate.
Speaking at the opening session, the Director General of IRENA, Francesco La Camera, considered the interaction he has had with the countries to be fundamental, in order to achieve the desired energy transformation, as well as to respond to the commitment established in the 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable development.
The official said that the IRENA Council meeting reaches a critical point in time and gives the international community an opportunity to strengthen collaboration and reinforce global commitment to renewables for climate action ahead of COP27 and COP28.
The United Nations Annual Conference on Climate Change (COP27) takes place in Sham el-Sheikh, Egypt, on the 7th and 8th of November, aimed at Heads of State and Government.
IRENA, based in Abu Dhabi, has set itself the goal of combating the effects of climate change.
Accession of Angola
Angola joined IRENA on January 26, 2009, when the United Nations Member States and the Regional Intergovernmental Organizations for Economic Integration, decided, at an International Conference on Energy, to set up the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to promote cooperation in the domain and development of the use of renewable energy technologies.
