Africa-Press – Angola. The consortium Trafigura, Vecturis and Mota Engil announced, on Friday(4), an investment worth US$400 million (USD) in the Lobito Corridor, in Benguela province.
The consortium, formed by the companies Trafigura, Vecturis and Mota-Engil, also took over the management of the Lobito Corridor to ensure the repositioning of the project as a vital infrastructure for facilitating the national economy and neighboring countries.
Alexandre Canas, president of Trafigura, who spoke to the press at the end of a meeting with the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, maintained that the Lobito Corridor is a corridor that will give life and is an axis between Lobito and Luau, until DRC, and will create the volume of exchange between the two countries.
He said that the intention is also to open the corridor to West Africa. Transfigura, he said, will be focused on the commercial part and Mota Engil with infrastructure and maintenance, while Vecturis will handle operations.
The negotiation for the concession to manage this infrastructure lasted two years, starting in 2020, going through the launch phase of the tender for the concession of contracts in 2021, culminating with the signing of the contract yesterday.
The Belgian company Vecturis is a private railway operator that provides transport services for passengers, minerals and goods anywhere in the world. Founded in 2006, it is assumed, in the market, as one of the most experienced railway operators in private railway operations in emerging economies and already operates in countries such as South Africa, Brazil, Russia, among others.
For over 70 years, operating in the Angolan market, in the Engineering and Construction sector, the Portuguese company Mota-Engil is also part of the consortium. The Swiss company Trafigura, founded in 1993, is one of the largest physical commodities trading groups in the world. Trafigura also owns and operates a number of industrial assets, including the fuel storage and distribution company Puma Energy. It currently employs over 13,000 people in 48 countries.
