Africa-Press – Angola. The presiding judge of the district of Bié, Nganga Liberdade Pilates da Silva, expressed his concern in the city of Cuito with excessive preventive detention and overcrowding in prisons in this central/southern region of the country.

Nganga Liberdade Pilates da Silva was speaking Friday during an inspection visit to the Cuito jails by the accompanying member of the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSMJ) to Bié, honoring judge José Tandala Domingos.

At the moment, there are 74 cases of excessive preventive detention, two of which are already in the preparatory instruction phase. To put an end to this situation, the judge informed that the district court of Bié created, a month ago, a commission, to analyze only cases of excess of pre-trial detention.

As for overcrowding, for example, in the Cuito prison alone, built with a capacity for 250 inmates, it currently houses 716 people, of whom 407 are detainees.

Prison services in the province of Bié control two penitentiary units, namely Cuito and Capolo, all in the municipality of Cuito, with 1,21 prisoners. The Cuquema prison will soon be opened, also in Cuito.
