Africa-Press – Angola. A proposal to elevate Lobito to the category of Provincial Capital of Culture was discussed this Thursday by local artists in this railway port city in Benguela.

The information was provided to press by the secretary of the Literary and Cultural Association of Angola, Eduardo Tchanja, on the sidelines of the meeting, held on the occasion of the National Day of Culture, to be celebrated on 8 January.

The official justified the intention by the fact that the city had exhibited world-class carnivals in the 60s and 70s of the last century.

Asked about the current moment of Culture at a local level, he said that it was far behind the cultural movement experienced between the 80s and 90s, where groups of different categories exhibited themselves with competence, due to the existing conditions, mainly provided by State institutions.

As a man of the performing arts, he remembered, with sadness, some spaces that hosted theater, music and dance shows, such as recreational centers, with emphasis on the Nimas 500 cinema, which is almost in rubble and with the prospect of being demolished.

“It will not be possible to have notable cultural events if agents and associations do not have a close relationship with local governments”, he considered.

Eduardo Tchanja spoke with hope about the rehabilitation of the Flamingo cinemas, in Lobito, and Monumental, in Benguela, as part of the provincial government’s emergency works.

During the meeting, held at the Municipal Administration of Lobito, the participants spoke about the current state of culture in the municipality and the role of Associations.

Until the 8th of January, a multidisciplinary fair, music, theater and dance parade is planned.

To close the day, according to the program, there will be a carnival parade and recognition of men of the arts.
