Africa-Press – Angola. A press conference will be held on the 16th by the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB), to address the preparation of the last qualifying window for this year’s World Cup in Asia (African zone), which Luanda will host from the 20th to the 28th of February.

The information was provided this Monday to press by the vice-president of the governing body of the sport in the country, Sílvio Lemos, confirming the endorsement of the International Federation (FIBA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MINJUD).

Without specifying the location of the meeting with the journalists, the former player of the National Team only said that issues inherent in the organization of the competition will be addressed, after the country hosted the first window, in November 2021, in the province of Benguela.

The event will take place at Kilamba’s Multipurpose Pavilion, with capacity for 12,720 spectators.

The last qualifying window for the world cup will cost the State coffers between 200 and 300 thousand US dollars, according to an interview that the president of the FAB, Moniz Silva, granted, in the previous period, to the program “Domingo Desportivo”, of the Public Television of Angola (TPA).

In qualifying, Angola occupies the second position in the leaderboard of group E, with 12 points, against 14 of Côte d ́Ivoire, in the lead. The series also includes Cape Verde, Nigeria, Guinea and Uganda.

Egypt will organize, at the same time, the F series, which includes South Sudan, Senegal, Tunisia, DRC and Cameroon.

The first two teams from each group of six teams each and the best third-placed team in the overall ranking qualify for the World Cup in Asia, totaling the five places that the continent is entitled to.

The Angolans have already played in the World Cups in Spain (1986), Argentina (1990), Canada (1994), United States of America (2002), Japan (2006), Turkey (2010), Spain (2014) and China (2019).

The world event, to take place in three countries, namely Indonesia, Philippines and Japan, from August 25th to September 10th of this year, will have the unprecedented participation of 32 selections.

Spain is the defending champion.
