Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan writer and journalist João Melo will put on sale, in the United States of America, his book of short stories “Angola is wherever I plant my field”, to be published by Editora Iskanchi Press.
The book, whose release date has yet to be announced, will hit bookstores next Monday, January 30, 2023.
In a note that press had access to this Tuesday, in Luanda, the Publisher clarifies that it is a translated version of the original title “The day Donald Duck ate Daisy for the first time”.
The writer launched his original work in Portuguese, in Angola, in 2006, recalls Iskanchi Press, a publisher dedicated to promoting African authors in the North American and Canadian markets.
The book is described as a collection of 18 humorous and absurdist short stories that “bring together postmodernism, postcolonial realities and the history of Angola, through an intrusive author and narrator”.
Iskanchi is hopeful that ‘Angola is wherever I plant my field’ will make readers laugh as they reflect on life and society as they read the stories set in Luanda, Haifa, America and North Korea.
According to Iskanchi, historians claim that at least a quarter of all African Americans have ancestry in Angola, but that many Americans “have little contact with the rich history of this country” in Southern and Central Africa.
Critics consider João Melo a master of humor and irony, as well as a leading figure in African postmodernism.
João Melo is also the author of “The serial killer and other stories that are laughable or maybe not” and “Filhos da Pátria”, among other works.
Winner of the 2009 National Culture and Arts Prize, in the literature category, for his literary work as a whole, João Melo is usually published in Angola and Portugal, but also has books published in Brazil, Italy and Cuba by Editora Caminho.
He also has poems and short stories published in various anthologies, magazines and literary websites in English, French, German, Arabic and Mandarin.
A founding member of the Union of Angolan Writers (UEA) and the Angolan Academy of Letters, Melo was a member of the National Assembly (Parliament) and a member of the government until 2019.
With his full name Aníbal João da Silva Melo, the author, who directed several media, public and private, was born in Luanda, in 1955.
He graduated in Social Communication and did a master’s degree in Communication and Culture, in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
Currently, he divides his life between Luanda, Lisbon, Houston and Washington DC.
