Africa-Press – Angola. The work carried out by Angola, at the level of the African Union (AU), to mobilize support and achieve lasting peace on the continent, this Thursday was highlighted by the CPLP Group in Ethiopia.
Meeting yesterday in Addis Ababa, the Group of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) also highlighted Angola’s efforts to raise awareness and mobilize support for reconciliation in Africa.
According to a note from the Angolan Embassy in that country, the Group welcomed the commemoration, for the first time, of the 31st of January, “Day of Peace and Reconciliation in Africa”.
The commemoration ceremony of the date, marked last Tuesday,
included a declaration by the Angolan President, João Lourenço, as AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation.
According to the Angolan ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the AU, Francisco da Cruz, the celebration of the event “was an opportunity to mobilize and reaffirm support (…) for the processes in Luanda and Nairobi on the conflict in eastern DRC ”.
He added that the event called for the full implementation of the Pretoria peace agreement between the Federal Government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front and the accompanying Nairobi Declaration.
He highlighted that the inaugural commemoration was also an opportunity to urge the parties involved in other peace processes, namely Libya, Sudan and South Sudan to actively engage in the implementation of the commitments assumed.
At yesterday’s meeting, the CPLP Group in Ethiopia approved its Action Program for 2023 and outlined the next steps leading to the reinforcement of the use of the Portuguese language in the work of the African Union.
The Group, chaired “pro tempore” by Angola (2021-2023 biennium), is an autonomous body of the CPLP Member States in Ethiopia, with an informative nature for the exchange of ideas and experiences on issues of common interest.
Its fundamental mission is to reinforce cultural, economic, political and diplomatic cooperation between its members.
