Africa-Press – Angola. The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for African Affairs, Martha Pobee, encouraged this Monday, in Luanda, Angola, to continue building good governance and strengthening its institutions.
The official was speaking to the press at the end of a meeting with the President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, as part of a working visit that she has been making, since Sunday, to the country.
In her brief speech, Martha Pobee welcomed the fact that this sovereign body had created consultation sessions that allow understanding and progress.
“Peace leads to democracy and development. All these elements must go together, for the type of work of parliamentary leadership”, she said.
The working visit of the UN Under-Secretary-General for African Affairs, Martha Pobee, lasts two hours and is part of the reinforcement of cooperation between Angola and the United Nations.
Even yesterday, the official was received, in audience, by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço. On behalf of the UN, the diplomat expressed continued support for the initiatives of the Angolan Head of State, as a mediator for the African Union, in the search for solutions for peace and security in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In turn, he discussed with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, questions about preventive diplomacy in order to avoid conflicts in the countries of the region, having reviewed issues related to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Central African Republic ( RCA).
Senior leaders also assessed issues of peace and security in the Central and Southern regions of the African continent, with particular emphasis on the Great Lakes.
