Africa-Press – Angola. Angola marks, this Tuesday, April 4, the Day of Peace and National Reconciliation, a date that marks the end of the war and the beginning of peaceful coexistence among Angolans.

In 2002, the armed conflict came to an end, after 27 years of war, which caused thousands of deaths, displacement, orphans and widows, as well as the destruction of various infrastructures.

It was on April 4, 2002, that the Government and UNITA
signed the most consistent peace agreement in the country’s history, opening space for the emergence of a new and united Angola.

The search for peace has always been the wish of Angolans, but it only became real after the death of UNITA’s historic leader, Jonas Savimbi.

The peace pact began to be discussed on March 18, 2002, in the commune of Cassamba, Luchazes municipality, Moxico province, when the Army general, Geraldo Sachipengo Nunda, of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), and the then head of UNITA’s General Staff, General Abreu Muego “Kamorteiro”, signed a cease-fire “pre-agreement”.

The military agreement was signed on March 30, 2002, in the capital of Moxico, but the Luena Memorandum of Understanding took shape on April 4, 2002, in Luanda.

Generals Armando da Cruz Neto, for the FAA, and Abreu Muengo “Kamorteiro”, for UNITA, signed the Memorandum, in the presence of the then President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos, civil society personalities, religious leaders and representatives of the body diplomatic.

From then on, the 4th of April became one of the most important dates in the lives of Angolans.

Since then, Angolans have sought

to boost the growth and socio-economic development of the Nation, which is rich in natural and mineral resources.

Central act in Namibe

The central act of the April 4 celebrations, this year, will take place in Namibe province, in a ceremony to be chaired by the Minister of State for the Social Area, Dalva Ringote.

As part of the date, several Angolan personalities and entities will be honored this Tuesday by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, some posthumously, for having stood out in the fight for National Independence, Peace, Democracy and National Reconciliation.

Also in the capital of the country, the city of Luanda, it is planned, this Tuesday morning, the hoisting of the Flag Monument, at the National Museum of Military History.

The agenda for the celebrations foresees the

deposition of a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, on the Luanda waterfront, culminating in the 21 strokes of the Bell of Peace, at the Palace of Justice.

This year, the national program for the Day of Peace and National Reconciliation includes the inauguration of some social equipment in the education and health sectors, the planting of trees, among other events.
