Africa-Press – Angola. Twenty-three people died of malaria in the first quarter of this year in the province of Lunda Sul, 39 fewer cases compared to the same period in 2022, Wednesday.

The data was advanced by the provincial supervisor of the Program to Combat Malaria, Ana Celestino, indicating that 63,202 cases were registered in the said period, against the 68,367 reported in the previous year.

He added that the municipality of Saurimo recorded the highest number of deaths and registered cases, followed by Cacolo, Muconda and Dala.

“The number of deaths from malaria has decreased considerably due to the programs implemented by the health units”, he stressed.

He appealed to the population to prioritize the elimination of mosquito multiplication foci, such as ponds, garbage, make the correct use of mosquito nets, which aims to stop the spread of malaria in communities.

During the first quarter of the current year, 1,586 insecticide-treated mosquito nets were distributed.

Malaria is an acute febrile infectious disease caused by Plasmodium-type protozoa, transmitted by infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, also known as “nail mosquitoes”.
