Africa-Press – Angola. Three guarantee judges started their judicial activities at the District Court of Cuanhama, southern Cunene province, on Friday, in the context of safeguarding respect and protection of citizens’ fundamental rights, in the preparatory instruction phase.
The information was provided to press by the presiding judge of the District Court of Cuanhama, Afonso Pinto, stressing that due to the small number of judges available for the region, in a first phase all will be working in the court of Cuanhama.
He said that they will travel depending on the notifications, as they are available to respond where necessary.
“These three guarantee judges will respond for the entire territorial extension of Cunene province, assist all defendants and places where the Public Ministry is installed”, he underlined.
According to the magistrate, the norm would be one judge for each district, but we only had two appointed initially and later the Superior Council of Magistracy decided to fit the presiding judges for this task.
He made it known that two districts are planned for Cunene, one in Cuanhama with headquarters in Ondjiva which also responds to the processes of the municipalities of Namacunde and Cuvelai and another in Xangongo, which will attend to Ombadja, Cahama and Curoca.
The functions of these judges are laid down in Article 313 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, and these (judges of guarantees) begin to enact measures restricting freedom in the procedural instruction phase, previously exercised by the prosecutor.
