Diamond mining continues to attract immigrants from the DRC

Africa-Press – Angola. The diamond exploration areas in the province of Lunda Norte continue to be the main attractions for immigrants from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), who try to use “fiotes” paths, away from the surveillance of the defense and security forces, to reach such areas and practice mining.

The municipalities of Cambulo, Chitato, Caungula, Cuango and Lóvua have been the main targets of immigrants, as they share a vast border with the DRC, according to the spokesman for the Provincial Command of the National Police in Lunda Norte, Domingos Muanafumo, who was speaking to press about the migratory movement in that region.

He informed that in the last operation carried out at the Cambulo, Chitato, Caungula, Cuango and Lóvua border posts, the Border Guard Police (PGF) recorded 108 cases of border violations that resulted in the arrest and expulsion of 589 illegal immigrants from the DRC, accompanied by 57 children.

He said that in addition to the intention of mining the strategic mineral, the immigrants use the province of Lunda as a “bridge” to reach the country’s capital, Luanda.

On the occasion, he appealed to the population and traditional authorities, in the sense of collaborating with defense and security bodies, in the fight against illegal immigration, exploitation and illicit trafficking of diamonds, fuel smuggling, among other crimes that occur along the borders with the DRC.

He also appealed to the need for the population to denounce citizens who help illegal immigration, giving them shelter, pretending to be family members.

The province of Lunda Norte has a border extension (land and river) of 770 km.
