Africa-Press – Angola. The role of women in promoting development in Africa dominated the meeting that the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, held Wednesday, with the former president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and UN envoys , Bintou Keita, and from the African Union, Bineta Diop.

The Liberian, elected Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2011, told the press, at the end of a joint audience, that the main challenges reserved to gender and the strategy for strengthening the African women’s network, an organization of which she is patron, had been discussed.

Senegalese activist Bineta Diop, special envoy of the African Union for Women, Peace and Security to the United Nations, said it was important for women to adopt role models that contribute to silencing guns on the continent.

He defended the existence of female leaders who better represent society and who work for peace, security, economic development and trade, referring that Angola is one of the best examples on the continent.

Bineta Diop also defended the promotion of a positive masculinity that contributes to the successful implementation of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Bineta Diop, as well as the specialist in conflict resolution and special envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Bintou Keita, are in the country to participate, from the 25th to the 26th of this month, in the first International Women’s Forum for Peace and Democracy.

Under the motto “Technological innovation as a tool for achieving food security and combating drought on the African continent”, the event aims to reaffirm the political commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

The forum plans to highlight, among others, the role that the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, has played in promoting peace and reconciliation in Africa, which is why he has earned the title of “Champion of Peace” from the African Union.
