Jurist defends decolonization of African thought

Africa-Press – Angola. The jurist and lawyer Sebastião Vinte e Cinco defended, this Monday, in the city of Huambo, the decolonization of African thought, as he considers it to be one of the main barriers to the continent’s development.

Sebastião Vinte e Cinco, author of the book “África! What’s the next step?”, launched in February 2022, spoke to press, about the challenges of the development of the African continent, which on the 25th of this month completed 60 years, an annual celebration of the founding of the Organization of the African Union (OAU) , which later became the African Union (AU).

The jurist referred that the process of decolonization of African thought built by the settlers on Africa and the assumption of responsibilities at the level constitute the greatest challenges for the promotion of the continent’s development, hence the book approach.

“A large part of Africans still think as the colonists projected us to think in more than 100 or 200 years, after leaving the continent, the cradle of humanity”, he emphasized.

Therefore, he considered it imperative that Africans assume their reality, the causes and effects of their behavior and put in perspective a new march, which aims to identify and solve the problems afflicting the continent.

He said that Africans have the challenge of starting a new path that allows them to rediscover their ancestry, cultural roots and originality.

He highlighted the need to insert the ideals of the Pan-Americanists in the curricular plans of educational institutions, in order to change the syllabus, which are, for the most part, influenced by the mentality of the colonial powers.

About the book, the author mentioned that he makes an appreciation for the entire community of the African continent, including politicians, economists, jurists, students and workers.

The author sold and autographed his work last weekend, on the sidelines of the ordinary and extraordinary general meeting of the Angolan Bar Association.

Written in four chapters, the book makes a transversal approach to other and various themes that touch on the lives of Africans, from politics, economy, migration and religiosity.

A specialist in Civil Law, Sebastião Vinte e Cinco was, from 2018 to 2020, resident commentator on African politics for the Africa Magazine program on Rádio Nacional de Angola. He is a columnist for Jornal de Angola and a non-resident commentator for TV Zimbo.
