Africa-Press – Angola. The final of the 2021/22 edition of the Football Champions League will be played in Paris instead of St Petersburg, UEFA announced this Friday (25), following Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine.
The stage for the decisive meeting of the main European club competition is changed for the third consecutive year, after Lisbon and Porto hosted the 2019/20 and 2020/21 finals, due to the covid-19 pandemic, in both cases to the detriment of Istanbul, Turkey.
A day after having “vehemently carried out the military invasion”, UEFA met the executive committee to assess the situation in Ukraine, deciding to withdraw from Russia the organization of the ‘Champions’ final, scheduled for 28 May.
The stadium that would host the final in St Petersburg is named after energy giant Gazprom, one of UEFA’s main sponsors since 2012.
In the early hours of Thursday, Russia launched a military offensive in Ukraine, with ground forces and bombing targets in several cities, which has already claimed at least half a hundred deaths, 10 of them civilians, in Ukrainian territory, according to Kiev.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the “special military operation” in Ukraine aims to “demilitarize and denazify” its neighbor and that it was the only way for the country to defend itself. of its “results” and “relevance”.
The attack was immediately condemned by the international community in general and prompted emergency meetings of several governments, including the Portuguese, and of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the European Union (EU) and the UN Security Council.
