Minister reaffirms commitment to sustainable development

Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of State for the Social Area, Carolina Cerqueira, said Thursday (3), in Nairobi, that Angola has made a commitment to sustainable development since the proclamation of National Independence in 1975, when two months later the first week was held. Environment, to address the role of a healthy environment in sustaining economic growth and social progress.

According to the minister, since that date, Angola has repeatedly reaffirmed this commitment, enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic, as a fundamental right and today the environmental agenda is a priority of the Government’s National Development Programme.

Speaking at the opening plenary session of the international event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the creation of the United Nations Environment Program – UNEP, Carolina Cerqueira assured that the Government has implemented integrated programs for the capture, reserve and distribution of water, through a wide network irrigation systems and dams to mitigate the effect of drought and ensure the promotion of family farming with innovative food systems in order to promote well-being, alleviate hunger and poverty and increase the resilience of communities.

In this sense, it recognized the interdependence between nature and the precepts of sustainable development, integrating it into national policies, strategies and programs for territorial development and effective peace, with a holistic and pragmatic vision.

In the regional chapter, Angola is a partner in the conservation of the Congo Basin Forest, through the Maiombe Transfrontier Initiative and, on the other hand, is part of one of the largest conservation areas in the world, in the Okavango-Zambeze Region, said Carolina Cerqueira .

President’s Message

Just yesterday, the Minister of State for the Social Area delivered a message from the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, to his Kenyan counterpart, Uhuru Kenyatta, on the sidelines of the session commemorating the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Environment Program ( UNEP).

In the message, the Angolan statesman reiterates the strong ties of friendship between the two countries and peoples, as well as the willingness to strengthen cooperation relations between the two States.
