Africa-Press – Angola. The National Demining Center (CND) in Cuando Cubango needs reinforcement of technical means for demining, transport and logistics, to intervene in the demining process on the Cuito Cuanavale/Mavinga section and on the agricultural hubs of Fio and Kuatir.
This Wednesday, the head of the CND department in the province, Rodrino Jorge Nana, assured that the means of transport in his possession date back to 2006 and make it difficult for demining technicians to travel, given the specific nature of the land and the current state of the roads in the region.
“The demining process is slow in Cuando Cubango, due to lack of means of transport and logistics. There is a need for reinforcement of new means to speed up the work, to provide better assistance in demining based on the requests of the population in the communities”, he said.
He referred that, despite these limitations and occasional notifications received from police authorities, traditional authorities and the population in general, from January to the present date it was possible to intervene in the municipalities of Menongue, Cuchi and Cuito Cuanavale, which resulted in the collection and destruction of 126 explosive devices not detonated.
The official explained that the brigade made up of 47 technicians clarified an area of 150,500 square meters in the village of Ndumbu (Menongue), with a record of six accidents with mines, which resulted in the death of a citizen and several heads of cattle.
Rodrino Jorge Nana said that in this locality, which is 45 kilometers from the municipal seat of Menongue, 53 anti-tank mines, two personal mines, 25 small caliber ammunition and 750 pieces of metal were removed from the ground.
The official was concerned about the high number of children who collect metal, which represents a great danger, having appealed to the population to be more careful when carrying out this practice, to avoid accidents with mines in the region.
