Africa-Press – Angola. The director general of the Penitentiary Service, Bernardo Gourgel, ruled out the existence of cases of excessive preventive detention in the penitentiary units, in Cabinda, and considered the number of the penal population in the region to be “reasonable”.
Speaking to the press, after visiting the Yabi prison unit and the Civil Prison, he admitted the existence of “some delay” in the processing of cases in the judicial phase.
As part of the three-day working visit, concluded Saturday, to Cabinda to verify the functioning of the penitentiary establishments, the commissioner official traveled to the municipality of Cacongo. Here, Bernardo Gourgel got in touch with the works at the Bembe prison unit, which is scheduled to open in the next quarter of this year.
Since Thursday in Cabinda, the director general of the Penitentiary Service has had meetings with the deputy governor, Miguel de Oliveira, with the provincial delegate of the Ministry of the Interior, Eusébio Domingos e Costa, the direction of the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) , as well as with public prosecutors.
