Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic of Malawi, Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, this Thursday formally accredited Azevedo Xavier Francisco, as Ambassador of Non-Resident Angola, in a ceremony held at the Kamuzu Palace, in Lilongwe, the country’s capital.
The official accreditation of the Angolan diplomat was attended by senior officials of the Malawi Presidency.
On the same occasion, the ambassadors of Ghana, Indonesia, Turkey, Israel, Qatar, Rwanda, Palestine, Oman and Qatar were also received and officially recognized;
Local observers attach particular importance to the increase in diplomatic relations between Angola and Malawi, a landlocked country in the SADC region with an estimated population of 20 million. Agriculture is the mainstay of its economy.
Malawi wants to cooperate with Angola in the fields of Defense and Security, Transport, Trade, Fisheries, in addition to the purchase of oil derivatives, such as fuels and lubricants.
On the sidelines of the accreditation ceremony, Ambassador Azevedo Francisco held informal meetings with senior officials from the Defense and Transport sectors. Until next Saturday, here in Lilongwe, the Angolan diplomat has scheduled working meetings with senior officials from Agriculture, Tourism and Industry.
Cooperation
In the military domain, for example, Malawi is interested in training its soldiers and officers in Angolan schools and taking advantage of the FAA’s experience in this specific segment.
The same focus was expressed in relation to Transport, particularly air transport, having been suggested by the local authorities of the sector, the beginning of official talks, aiming to include Malawi in the routes of the national flag company, TAAG.
Angola can benefit from Malawi’s experience in agriculture. The rice produced in this country is appreciated in several regions of the planet, in addition to tobacco, tea, corn and cassava.
At the end of the formal accreditation hearing, the Angolan diplomat said that Angola’s main objective is to diversify its economy and appealed to Angolan businessmen to pay more attention to the business opportunities that Malawi can offer;
The fertility of the soil, the climate and the tranquility prevailing in Malawi, has been attracting the interest of emerging Asian economies and not only – said Azevedo Francisco. “We, the neighbors, need to be more attentive,” he concluded.
Azevedo Francisco succeeds the late diplomat Jaime Vilinga as Angola’s ambassador to this country.
