The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, highlighted, this Tuesday, in Geneva, Switzerland, the Angolan State’s commitment to combining synergies with the specialized agencies of the United Nations (UN) to mitigate the problem of refugees and displaced people around the world.
The official made this commitment during her speech at the General Debate of the 74th Session of the Executive Council (ExCom) of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), where she shared the agency’s concern regarding the situation of refugees in the world, which has reached an unprecedented number last year.
The head of the Angolan delegation, according to a press release, also drew the attention of the members of the UNHCR Executive Council to the need to put an end to the selective solidarity that has been observed, motivating the persistence of prolonged cases, but which could already have been overcome.
The Secretary of State also appealed to ExCom-UNHCR member states and other actors to combine efforts to mobilize rapid and active responses to the growing number of displaced people and the resurgence of conflicts in various geo-political regions of the world. .
Esmeralda Mendonça announced the implementation, in the coming days, of a non-directed contribution, for 2023 and 2024, in favor of the various programs carried out by UNHCR.
He also stated that Member States need to continue working towards a more supportive world and towards a model of sustainable social inclusion for all people who find themselves in refugee status and who hope to be able to one day enjoy a shelter. , without any type of threat.
On the other hand, he noted with interest the process of reforms undertaken by the UNHCR management, including risk management, and called on the organization to take into account all points of view, within the framework of deliberations regarding the budgetary and financial deficit it is facing.
