Africa-Press – Angola. The director of the Multilateral Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX), Sara Silva, reaffirmed, this Friday, in Luanda, the importance of multilateralism in conflict resolution.

According to the official, Angola has been engaged in the prevention, mediation and resolution of conflicts on the African continent, especially in the Southern and Central African regions, with particular emphasis on the Great Lakes, taking into account the foundations of peace, security, development and human rights.

He reiterated the importance of the cooperation that Angola maintains with the UN and regional organizations, committing to promoting a policy of dialogue and tolerance, joining efforts in favor of preventing international security and the economic and social progress of the people.

Sara Silva was speaking at the opening act of the International Conference on the Role of Countries of the Global South in International Mediation and Consolidation of Peace held as part of the United Nations Day celebrations, a joint promotion between MIREX, Academia Diplomática Venâncio de Moura, Department of Political Affairs and Peacebuilding at the UN and the Global South Unit for Mediation at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro.

As an example of Angola’s dedication to conflict resolution, Sara Silva spoke of the holding of successive tripartite and quadripartite summits in Luanda, in recent years, which aimed to promote peace and stability, especially in the Great Lakes region.

In the record of conflict mediation, according to the diplomat, at the level of the African Union (AU), Angola was a member of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union on three occasions (2008/2009, 2012/2014 and 2018/2020) , while at the United Nations, as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, he was in 2002/2003 and 2015/2016.

According to the official, conflict prevention and mediation are indispensable instruments for maintaining peace and security at a global level, being the most economical and effective means than peacekeeping operations that aim to put an end to armed conflicts. after the occurrence.

He called on the United Nations and international organizations to continue investing in the process of conflict prevention and resolving disputes through peaceful means, ultimately creating a more harmonious World.

Meanwhile, the resident coordinator of the United Nations in Angola, Zahira Virani, recognized the commitment and dedication of the Angolan Government in achieving sustainable peace in Africa, reaffirming that Angola has been a Nation that sets a notable example in the region and in the world, for having managed to achieve and consolidate peace for more than two decades, an experience that led her to play an active role as a conflict mediator in the region.

The official hopes that the meeting will serve to institutionalize Angola’s conflict resolution efforts, an opportunity that allows strengthening skills in conflict mediation, with a view to transforming towards a consolidated peace and transforming the lives of people in countries that still suffer the harmful effects of conflicts.

One of the speakers at the conference was Ambassador Ismael Martins, who addressed the topic “Angola, peace leadership and international mediation, local perspectives for building peace, Experience of Latin America and Experience of the African continent.
