Head of State ends official visit to Cape Verde

Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, concluded, Wednesday (16), the three-day official visit to Cape Verde, the first by a foreign statesman since the arrival of José Maria Neves to the presidency.

In the last official activity, the Angolan Head of State visited, in the company of his counterpart, José Maria Neves, the Electricity and Water Company (Electra), dedicated to the desalination of sea water into drinking water.

João Lourenço admitted the possibility for the country to implement the project to desalinate potable sea water in the south, especially in Namibe province.

Responding to journalists, in the balance of the visit, João Lourenço explained that the project found in the city of Mindelo, São Vicente Island, could be useful, once implemented in arid areas in the south of the country, more specifically in Namibe, in the sense of helping populations in times of drought.

“We will keep the company’s management contacts and, in due course, we will be able to analyze what steps to take in the future”, he said. Head of State considered it to be an undertaking of paramount importance, given the high level of production and supply, having encouraged the willingness of the entrepreneurs involved in the project.

“We have the possibility of doing the same in Bahia Farta and Namibe, as Benguela was once a producer of canned fish. At the moment, it is not producing, but we believe that it is an enterprise that can resume production at any time”, said the Angolan statesman, adding that he left Cape Verde, feeling that he had taken important steps to strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

He welcomed the fact that the issue related to the Mixed Commission, which had not met for 14 years had been corrected, and that, from now on, the meetings will follow the normal course. Regarding the visit to the Technical University of the Atlantic, on Tuesday morning in the city of Mindelo, on the island of São Vicente, he made it known that there are already contacts between the Maritime Institute of Namibe in Angola and the Technical University of the Atlantic of São Vicente in the sense of exchange between the two institutions.

During the visit that the Head of State made to the Universidade Técnica do Atlântico, where, in one of the rooms, he was informed about lessons in simulation and maritime maneuvers. On the occasion, the President of the Republic was invited to pilot a boat in the simulator, via the city of Mindelo to Lisbon, an action that left the instructors amazed, given the knowledge that the Angolan statesman demonstrated in driving.

In the end, he signed the institution’s book of honor: “Cape Verde is a successful house in the merchant marine, with high standard training of its own sailors. Angola will take advantage of this training capacity that Cape Verde offers, so that our professionals obtain the necessary follow-up and international certification and enable them to work anywhere in the world”.
