Africa-Press – Angola. The president of the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal, Augusto Santos Silva, defended this Tuesday, in Luanda, the need for Portuguese to become a working language in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP).
Augusto Santos Silva, who was speaking at the General Debate of the IPU Assembly, taking place in the Angolan capital, Luanda, highlighted that his country strongly supports Timor-Leste’s proposal for Portuguese to be a working language in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
He said it was timely that the theme of the IPU General Assembly is dedicated to the pursuit of the 16th of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in addition to the challenges, opportunities and support necessary to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda.
According to the Portuguese parliamentarian, for the 2030 agenda to continue it needs strong, prestigious and active parliaments.
“They are truly the engine of the rule of law and political citizenship, without which development is neither fair nor sustainable”, he pointed out.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, approved in 2015, is an action plan focused on defending people and the planet, which incorporates a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Essentially, the plan aims to achieve prosperity respectful of the planet and its inhabitants, which is why it is divided into 169 goals to be met by 2030, with a view to providing a global response to climate change and other phenomena.
Parliament’s role is unavoidable
In his intervention, Augusto Santos Silva explained that, in each country, the role of Parliament is unavoidable in the triple mission that characterizes it as the representation of all citizens in the plurality of political currents, as a legislative chamber and as a body for monitoring and scrutinizing the Government. and administration.
He noted that, regardless of whether the regime is parliamentary, presidential or mixed in nature, Parliament is always a body at the service of the population.
“It promotes civil peace because it welcomes and institutionalizes the debate of ideas, peacefully organizing social conflict, promotes justice, guarantees the rule of law, favors political alternation, makes laws and monitors their execution”, he stressed.
Led by Carolina Cerqueira, as President of the Angolan Parliament, the host country, the 147th General Assembly of the IPU will adopt several resolutions, with emphasis on “trafficking in orphanages: the role of parliaments in reducing harm”.
The penultimate day of the event (Wednesday) is reserved for the second Global Parliamentary Summit on the Fight against Terrorism and Prevention of Violent Extremism, with special emphasis on the deterioration of the security situation in Africa, in the Sahel.
