Africa-Press – Angola. The Deputy Attorney General of the Republic, Hernâni Beira Grande, stated, this Thursday, in Moçâmedes, that there are no records of excessive preventive detention in the penitentiary chain in the province of Namibe.
During his visit to this penitentiary establishment, as part of his two-day working day in the province of Namibe, he said that in the meeting with the inmates of this prison it was noted that there was no excess of preventive detention and violation of human rights in this establishment. penitentiary.
“What exists is overcrowding in the prison, which has the capacity to accommodate 500 inmates and has more than this number,” he said.
It also guaranteed conditions within the prison, especially food (three meals a day), health and accommodation.
He was also concerned about the high number of young prisoners who, for various reasons, were committing different crimes and which forced them to be in this condition, and appealed to them to serve their sentences and when they leave to behave in society as dignified citizens and with a new posture.
At this meeting, the criminal population requested the intervention of the coordinator of the Southern Judiciary Region, in order to intervene with the sentencing courts to speed up the processing of judicial processes in those cases involving inmates who have already completed their sentence.
In response, the coordinator guaranteed to take the concerns raised by the inmates and give due treatment in accordance with the Law.
“We will interact with the central PGR and the Supreme Court and see these situations resolved, as we also have 18 inmates here who are covered by the Amnesty Law and should now be released, as well as see the processes of those who have already fulfilled their sentences but he remains in jail”, he guaranteed.
