Africa-Press – Angola. Two free “broadband” internet access points were installed in the municipality of Saurimo, Lunda Sul province, as part of the “Angola Online” program, run by the National Institute for the Promotion of the Information Society (INFOSI).

These are the points installed in the civic garden, next to the Provincial Government of Lunda Sul and in the 28 de Maio garden.

The project, an initiative by INFOSI, a public body supervised by the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, aims to promote the development of the information society in Angola.

The general director of INFOSI, André Pedro, who spoke about the project, said that one of the main objectives of installing these points is the massification and digital inclusion of the region’s population in access to free internet.

He also highlighted that the installation of internet points has to do with the institution’s objectives, which is to guarantee free access to cities, with emphasis on students and other citizens who have economic possibilities to use the internet.

He made it known that INFOSI has currently installed 135 free internet points across the country, but it is expected, in the coming months, to cover 164 municipalities, highlighting that the intention is to install, in the medium term, five internet points in each province.

He said that, given the growing number of population in Saurimo, three more internet points will be installed in the coming days, to efficiently serve the population and empower young people technologically, as well as increase digital literacy in the district.

The “Angola Online” project has the capacity to operate within a radius of 400 meters and has user limits of 300 people per day.

The act was witnessed by the deputy governor for the Political, Economic and Social sector, Mendes Gaspar, executive administrator of Angola Telecom, António Mascarenha and the population.
