Moxico records increase in violence against children

Africa-Press – Angola. Twenty-three cases of violence against children were registered, in the province of Moxico, during the third quarter of the current year, by the National Children’s Institute (INAC).

According to the head of INAC’s provincial services, Elias Samuxito, compared to the same previous period there was an increase of two cases, related to the phenomenon of family abandonment, lack of food provision and birth registration and evasion of fatherhood.

He highlighted that the victims were children aged between five and 13 years old, including 12 girls.

To reverse the current situation, he reaffirmed that lectures have been held in schools and churches, as well as radio debates, to raise awareness among families about the protection of children’s rights.

“If families do not assume their true role in what has been the social protection of children, obviously we could have an exaggerated increase in cases of violence against children”, he warned.

With close to one million inhabitants, according to estimates by the National Statistics Institute, children represent 12 percent of the population of the province of Moxico, distributed across nine municipalities.
