Africa-Press – Angola. At least 205 families are homeless as a result of the rains that have been falling for 19 days in Huíla, which caused the partial destruction and collapse of homes in seven of the 14 municipalities in the province of Huíla, killing 25 people and injuring nine.

The families that correspond to around 760 people affected by the damage caused by the rains have all already been sheltered by the municipal administrations, according to the acting spokesperson for the Civil Protection and Fire Service of Huíla, Francisco Matias.

He declared that the data refer to the 18th of November to the present date, when the rains fell with greater intensity in the municipalities of Caconda, Chipindo, Cuvango, Gambos, Cacula, Humpata and Lubango, causing the collapse of two residences and the partial destruction of 85.

He stated that the biggest concern currently, with the rains, focuses on the flow levels of rivers, lakes and ponds, as well as precarious houses that are increasingly collapsing.

He said that these incidents are part of 82 incidents recorded during the period, all caused by rain, which also caused 34 human victims, of which 25 were killed and nine were injured, as well as the death of 200 heads of goat cattle due to atmospheric discharge.

Regarding the causes of human deaths, Francisco Matias highlighted that 24 occurred due to lightning, one due to electrocution, another due to the collapse of a wall, three due to presumed drowning, six due to floods and four due to falling trees.

He called on residents to abandon homes built near ravines, to avoid open areas and to take shelter under trees, as these are areas where lightning strikes occur.
