Africa-Press – Angola. The creation of improved plant selection techniques adaptable to cultivation areas with some altitude, could be the solution for growing vegetables in rainy weather, at the level of the province of Cuanza-Norte, considered, in Ndalatando, the chief of the IDA Provincial Department, Mateta Panzo.

The lack of tradition of vegetable cultivation in the region, in rainy weather, “is old”, but local agrarian authorities believe that it can be reversed with the emergence of Field Schools, created by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to assist producers in the use new food production techniques with proper handling of land and seeds.

According to the technician from the Agrarian Development Institute (IDA), the main vegetable growing areas in Cuanza-Norte are the municipalities of Ambaca, Cambambe, Cazengo and Lucala, which in the 2022/2023 Agricultural Campaign produced 12,718 tons of vegetables, cultivated in 2,826 hectares, considered insufficient for the consumption of 325,000 inhabitants residing in the four regions.

Mateta Panzo stressed that the Central and Southern Zone of Angola has a strong tradition in vegetable production, which gives rise to the possibility of following the good examples of cultivation in these areas.

The person responsible believes that the improvement of local cultivation areas, through the introduction of modern methods , associated with the support of permanent technical assistance can increase the cultivation of watermelon, tomatoes, onions, cabbage, eggplant, carrots, peppers and others, appreciated by the population .

Some sellers at the municipal market of Catome de Cima, in Ndalatando, heard by press, were unanimous in stating that, at this time of year, the vegetables consumed locally originate in Benguela and Cuanza-Sul, a factor that causes the rise in prices, with freight costing 200 thousand kwanzas for three tons.

A five-kilo bucket of onions, currently sold for five thousand kwanzas, is bought for just a thousand at the cacimbo station.
