Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic appealed, on Friday, to Angolan society to vehemently condemn, in accordance with the law, all acts of vandalism against public and private assets that have been occurring throughout the country.
In a message published on his Facebook account, João Lourenço discourages the behavior, stressing that one cannot continue to watch idly the destruction of public property, such as electrical cables, water pipes, rails, factories, airports, as well as crossing prohibited places and looting of other resources.
“No citizen committed to the good of their country should remain indifferent in the face of a phenomenon that is so pernicious that it puts the life and well-being of the community at risk”, defended the President of the Republic, in the message, adding that everyone Behaviors that put human life, individual and collective, at risk must deserve the vehement condemnation of society, in accordance with the law.
This is not the first time that the President of the Republic has condemned acts of vandalism against public and private property that have occurred in the country. Last year, after the acts of vandalism and riots that occurred in Luanda, on the 10th of January, which was marked as one of the most serious, the Head of State sent a message to the Nation about what happened, through which he appealed to citizens to refrain from such practices.
That day, the country was surprised, in the early hours, by an act of rebellion that altered public order. The action gave rise to a wave of acts of vandalism to public and private property, as well as putting the physical safety and lives of several citizens, workers, in general, Health and Social Communication professionals at risk.
The pretext used by the protagonists of the action was the temporary shutdown of a “small” part of Luanda’s taxis, a measure aimed at stopping the spread of the SARS-Cov-2 virus, which causes Covid-19. The protesters taking to the streets took place at a time when the Government had already met, 100 percent, the main demand of the associations representing the taxi driver class, which simply involved increasing capacity to 75 percent.
The President of the Republic stated that the act pointed to the materialization of a “macabre” plan of ungovernability, through encouraging the vandalization of public and private assets, inciting disobedience and rebellion, in an attempt to “subvert democratically established power”.
At the time, the behavior merited public repulsion and condemnation from Angolan society, through representatives of political parties, religious denominations, non-governmental organizations, journalists and opinion makers.
Community surveillance
In order to prevent and combat acts of vandalization of public and private assets in the country, the second ordinary meeting of the Local Governance Council, held last Thursday, at the Palácio da Cidade Alta, under the guidance of the President of the Republic, considered the draft Presidential Decree approving the regulations for Community Surveillance Councils, as consultative bodies for provincial governors and municipal administrators in matters of design and implementation of public order, civil protection and illegal immigration policies.
“It is an issue that was viewed with great concern at the level of the Local Governance Council”, revealed to the press, at the end of the meeting, the Minister of Territorial Administration. Dionísio da Fonseca made it known that the councils have had legal statutes since 2016.
