Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, has been visiting, since early Saturday morning, in the municipality of Porto Amboim, Cuanza Sul, the Kitabanga Project, dedicated to the study and conservation of sea turtles in Angola.
The Head of State, accompanied by the First Lady, Ana Dias Lourenço, received general information about the project at the site.
The presidential couple also visited the sea turtle nesting area, at the mouth of the Longa River, where hundreds of turtles were transferred to the sea.
The Head of State also visited an environmental education area and a workshop where women artisans work.i
Started in 2003, in the Palmeirinhas area, in Luanda, Kitabanga is a sea turtle study and conservation project implemented by the biology department of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Agostinho Neto University.
The project is in partnership with the Kissama Foundation and the University of Namibe, as well as the approval of the Ministry of the Environment.
It monitors 150 kilometers of the coast, being deployed in the provinces of Bengo, Zaire, Benguela, Namibe and Cuanza Sul.
Among other actions, the Kitabanga Project tags, controls and protects sea turtles, as well as monitoring nest hatching and DNA studies.
