Africa-Press – Angola. Angola will be the organizing country of the 16th African Open Water Swimming Championship, to be held from April 30 to May 4, 2024, in the Alvalade pool and on Mussulo Island, in Luanda.

The information that PRESS had access to is on the official website of the Angolan Swimming Federation, led by Joaquim Santos.

According to the source, the decision for Angola to host this edition came from the meeting of the African Confederation of the sport (Africa Aquatics) on the eve of the World Championship held in Fukuoka, Japan, last July.

The points and performance of each competitor will count towards direct qualification for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

This is the highest point to be reached by national swimming on a continental level, after having organized Zonal IV for the second time in 2015 and 2023.

Angola, however, will be the ninth country to host this event that began in 1974 in Cairo, Egypt.

The Egyptians returned to host in 1982 and 2002, followed by Tunisia (1997, 1990 and 2022), Kenya (1998 and 2012), Morocco (2004 and 2010), South Africa (2008 and 2016).

Senegal (2006), Algeria (2018) and Ghana (2021) have organized once each.

The 2020 African championship, scheduled for South Africa, was canceled due to Covid-19.

South Africa, the continent’s most titled country, with seven, is the champion of the last edition held in Tunis (Tunisia).
