Africa-Press – Angola. The registration and proof of life process for Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland in the province of Benguela already has around ten thousand registered and is about to end.
Speaking to the press, on the sidelines of the anticipated Efeméride ceremony, its director, Jorge Sapessi, stated that interested parties have come from various parts of the country, due to the armed conflict, for registration.
“Many gather the documents, but there are also those who just bring witnesses”, he explained.
He said they were given time, but some, so far, have not shown up and are at risk of being left out of the system.
When asked about the existence of “ghosts”, he assured that this hypothesis was ruled out.
According to him, the group is divided into several categories, namely former combatants, war disabled, orphans and widows.
Regarding the group’s difficulties, he confirmed that the Government has mainly assisted the most vulnerable, with support from kits corresponding to the different professions, as well as training, despite some doing their own business to survive.
In his intervention, the vice-governor for the technical area and infrastructures, Adilson Gonçalves, highlighted that “the former combatants and veterans of the Fatherland deserve all our respect, for the sacrifices made and relevant services to the nation”.
He stated that the “group is in a notoriously vulnerable situation”, which requires the Government to take more improved measures to protect the sector.
“The Provincial Government of Benguela promises to do everything to ensure increasingly better living conditions for this fringe of society”, he stressed.
During the ceremony, the representatives of the class, present at the event, received identification cards in a symbolic way.
Among the activities of the event, the delegation, led by vice-governor Adilson Gonçalves, took a moment to pass by the Baía Farta Municipal Cemetery, to lay a wreath at the monument of soldiers who fell for the country.
Still in the fishing village, fisheries, the photovoltaic plant and Cidade do Sal were visited, to learn about the municipality’s potential and the investments made in the public and private sectors.
January 15th, the date of Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland, was institutionalized by law 26/11 of July 14th.
