I feel valued by the invitation from CAF - Akwá

Africa-Press – Angola. The former captain of the National Football Team, Alcebíades Maieco “Akwá”, told this Sunday that he feels valued for his presence in the African Championship (CAN’2023), which takes place in Côte d’Ivoire.

Invited as an ambassador for the African Football Confederation (CAF), Akwá speaks in recognition of the work well done as a player for national teams and clubs in Europe and Asia.

The biggest reference in Angolan football in recent decades, recalls that this is the second time that he has been recognized for his achievements in the “King” sport, after in 2022 being invited by the Qatar Confederation to the World Championship that he hosted.

After 13 years of suspension from all football, as part of an accusation of abandonment by Al-Wakra (Qatar), where he played, to progress for the National Team in CAN`2006, the former striker remains in Côte d`Ivoire until the 27th, when the initial phase of the test will have ended.

At the time, he had been sanctioned to pay 260 thousand US dollars and, given the problem, he ended his professional career prematurely at the age of 29, without the possibility of holding sporting positions.

Regarding Monday’s challenge between Angola and Algeria, for the 1st round of group D, at 9 pm, at the Paz Stadium, in Bouaké, the former Nacional de Benguela forward acknowledged that it would not be an easy task to start the race with a candidate to the title.

Akwá said that Algeria is clearly superior in terms of ranking, in addition to having players of recognized technical value, but said that Angola also has its arguments since “rankings don’t win games”.

The former deputy to the National Assembly (AN) said that starting the competition against a “giant” of African football with a victory or draw, in the worst case scenario, would be like a gift for Angolans who love football.

During his stay in Côte d`Ivoire, the source said that he will possibly participate in a game between “stars” of continental football, highlighting, however, that the activity has yet to be confirmed by CAF.
