Africa-Press – Angola. Fourteen deaths from tooth decay were recorded in 2023, in the Stomatology area of ​​the General Hospital of Uíge (HGU).

The hospital unit recorded the same number in 2022.

Speaking this Monday, the head of the Stomatology area at HGU, Manuel Miguel, explained that during the period 12,631 patients were consulted, of which 5,391 suffered tooth distraction.

In the previous period (2022), nine thousand and 687 patients were consulted.

He said that during the period, 122 patients were admitted to the hospital unit, while another 22 were transferred to Luanda, due to the severity of the disease.

He reported that between 20 and 40 patients are consulted at the HGU daily with problems of tooth decay, followed by tooth abscess with five to eight cases.

He reported that the majority of patients admitted to the institution are under 15 years of age.

Tooth decay is an infectious disease, caused by the bacteria Streptococcus Mutans, which adheres to the teeth, feeding on particles left over from recent meals, if the mouth is not cleaned.
