Africa-Press – Angola. The first director of the Angola Sports Medicine Center, Paulo Augusto Malheiro Múrias, was honored (Wednesday), in Luanda, for his work and contribution to the development of the sector and the success of the country’s missions in international competitions.
In an event that took place during the opening ceremony of the first scientific days of sports medicine, at the Dom Alexandre do Nascimento Hospital Training Center for Cardiopulmonary Diseases, the 71-year-old doctor, in addition to being awarded a certificate of Honor, also praised his qualities effects.
The awarding of the distinction, a responsibility of the current National Center for Sports Medicine (CENAMED), now directed by Stella Cristiano, organizer of the event, was the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Health, Leonardo Inocêncio, accompanied by his Sports counterpart, Teresa Ulundo, and other personalities.
On the occasion, the trajectory and dedication of the professional, who currently still makes his contribution in the academic and business sector, were highlighted in statements by the former Minister of Sports, Sardinha de Castro, the president of the Angolan Olympic Committee (COA), Gustavo da Conceição, among others.
Still on the awardee Paulo Múrias, he was a basketball player, having been captain of the first National Team, with his first medal (3rd place) won in Kenya. He began his business journey in 1990, with the project of the first private clinic in the country, Medgroup.
Later, he was in charge of the first medical emergency evacuation system, MRI, and was also the founder of the first Physiotherapy gym in the country, Fisiomed. Before being installed in the Cidadela Complex, the first Sports Medicine Center was located in the lower part of Luanda, close to the waterfront.
In the tribute, after much applause and testimonies from former colleagues, doctor Stella Cristiano, made an incursion into the history of the sector, stating that sports medicine in the country was recognized as a medical specialty by the Order of Doctors of Angola, in 1987, with the award of the first Specialist Title to Dr. Paulo Augusto Malheiro Múrias.
This was followed by a round table, in which the honoree addressed the topic of; Sports Medicine in Angola, where he explained the work done in the past until reaching the current stage and his professional performance with the national teams.
Organized by CENAMED, the meeting, which ends on Thursday (22), includes aspects about the multidisciplinary nature of the sector, pre-season cardiac assessment, the importance of sleep for athletes, sports psychology, nutrition, physical training, among others themes.
Under the motto “Sports Medicine in Angola: Past, Present and Future”, in addition to nationals, it also has foreign lecturers.
The pre-day courses, which started on Monday, are aimed at health professionals, sports agents and those interested in general, emphasizing the importance of basic life support.
The closing ceremony will highlight the impact of multidisciplinary work on sports performance, presented by a Brazilian speaker.
The participation of international experts from Portugal and Brazil, who also teach courses, highlights CENAMED’s commitment to promoting the constant updating of health professionals in Angola.
