TAAG plane bound for Lisbon diverted to Seville

Africa-Press – Angola. A TAAG plane that was making the Luanda-Lisbon air connection was, in the early hours of this Monday (4), diverted to Seville airport, due to a failure that affected a radar at the Portuguese capital’s airport.

NAV, the Portuguese air navigation company, refers in a statement that it registered, at the end of the morning, at 05:41, a failure in the air traffic management system that forced the activation of the measures foreseen for situations of this nature, ” in order to ensure complete safety in air transport”.

The system failure occurred at a time of low traffic, NAV said. Even so, for safety reasons, a limitation of the traffic flow capacity was implemented, which caused “some delays in the early hours of the morning”.

Additionally, as an official NAV source confirmed to Lusa, a TAAG plane that made the connection between Luanda and Lisbon was diverted to the airport in Seville, Spain.

“Despite the occasional failure of the air traffic management system, the existing safety procedures to deal with similar situations ensured that traffic safety was never at stake”, assured the institution, quoted by Lusa.

NAV’s Director of Communications, Paulo Lagarto, told the Observer that four flights were affected by the radar failure. He assured, however, that by the end of yesterday morning the situation would return to normal.

At the time of speaking, the NAV spokesperson could not say what caused the radar failure. “We are evaluating. It is the first time that this has happened to our company. But I must assure people who fly that when this type of thing happens, there are well-studied and well-designed contingency plans so that everything can run within traditional safety standards”, stated.
