Africa-Press – Angola. The director of the Institutional Communication and Press office of the provincial Command of the National Police in Cunene, chief superintendent Nicolau Tuvekalela, defended, this Tuesday, the continued collaboration of the civilian population in the sense of handing over weapons voluntarily, aiming to guarantee the safety of communities.

In a statement, on the sidelines of the International Day of Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness, marked, March 5, he said that the process of disarmament of the civilian population is an essential condition to alleviate citizens’ feelings of insecurity.

He stated that weapons outside the control of the authorities can encourage delinquency, and therefore urged collaboration from traditional authorities and civil society in denouncing those who possess weapons illegally.

He made it known that in 2023, the agency recorded 20 crimes using firearms, with emphasis on robberies, threats, attempted robberies, bodily harm and qualified homicide.

Regarding the disarmament of the civilian population, he reported that he received only two firearms.

It should be noted that Angola developed, from 2008-2010, a disarmament process for the civilian population, aiming at the voluntary surrender of firearms and reducing the rate of violent crimes.

Angola is party to international legal instruments, such as the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime and respective additional protocols, such as the Protocol Against the Illicit Manufacturing and Trafficking of Firearms, their parts and ammunition.

The date is an annual event held on March 5, 2023, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2022.

The proclamation of this day aims to promote greater awareness and understanding of disarmament and non-proliferation issues, especially among young people.

The initiative reflects the UN’s ongoing commitment to the goals of multilateral disarmament and arms limitation, essential to maintaining international peace and security.
