Country seeks balance between economic growth and environmental protection

Africa-Press – Angola. The country seeks to balance economic growth with environmental protection, with technology playing a dual role, said, this Tuesday, in Luanda, the Secretary of State for Climate Action and Sustainable Development, Paula Coelho.

Speaking at the third edition of the Angola Digital Forum (ADF), under the motto “Digital transformation and sustainability”, the governor said that while technological infrastructure can boost the economy, inadequate management of technological waste and energy consumption can cause damage environmental.

According to the Secretary of State, despite the policies in force, Angola faces challenges in the effective implementation of environmental standards in the technological area, and these challenges also represent opportunities for innovation and the establishment of the country as a leader in sustainable technology in the region.

It considers that, in this process, education and awareness are key to the effectiveness of implementing policies, both for corporations and the general public, regarding the importance of environmental sustainability in the technological area.

“This is done through information campaigns, educational programs in schools and universities and partnerships with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that promote the adoption of sustainable practices,” he said.

Despite the progress, he said, the country faces challenges such as the need to reinforce the implementation and monitoring of environmental laws.

Paula Coelho said that Angola has the opportunity to lead regional initiatives, sharing successes and learnings, as well as strengthening cross-border cooperation on environmental issues.

He recalled that within the scope of the results of COP 28, held in Dubai, there was a new proposal from financiers that mobilized USD 3.5 billion for the green climate fund.

“There is a need for institutions to know the principle from the point of view of program implementation, through the Ministry of the Environment, which has prepared with some partners the understanding on sustainable finance, which is one of the pillars of the National Climate Change Strategy”, he emphasized.
