Africa-Press – Angola. The Secretary of State for Social Communication, Nuno Caldas Albino, urged journalists this Tuesday, in Luanda, to develop comprehensive work on the General Population and Housing Census process (RGPH-2024).

The government official, who was speaking during the first training seminar on Census2024, considered that journalists play a crucial role in mobilizing citizens for their mass participation in the process, which takes place on July 19th this year.

For the Secretary of State, social communication professionals constitute an irreplaceable vehicle in interacting and transmitting the importance of carrying out a general population and housing census, in order to obtain the best results.

Dozens of participants, from different media bodies, in Luanda, were trained in matters related to the objectives, importance, basic principles and steps for carrying out the Census, in an initiative of the National Statistics Institute (INE), in coordination with the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication (MINTTICS).

In Nuno Caldas Albino’s opinion, the training action will allow professionals to better deal with matters, as well as facilitate advertising among families and quality coverage.

In turn, the general director of INE, José Calienji, said that this class is the main spokesperson for the process, which is why he called for the creation of content that increases the dissemination of this activity.

“There are 94 days left and there is an urgent need to provide more information to communities through the media, in different national languages”, he argued.

However, some participants interviewed, were unanimous in considering the meeting opportune.

According to Fowem Macanja, from Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA), the seminar served to resolve some doubts, particularly linked to the treatment to be carried out in relation to foreign citizens, those absent due to travel and the prison population.

Also radio host Mariquinha João, from Rádio Prenda, highlighted the importance of families recognizing the need for everyone to participate in the process, as this will allow the Government to monitor communities and thus meet real local needs.

Amélia Cabinda, from Rádio Mais, highlights that she has absorbed good working tools for population census.

Census/2024

The General Census of Population and Housing (RGPH-2024), known as Census/2024, will be carried out in the country’s 18 provinces, 164 municipalities and 562 locations including communes, districts, neighborhoods and villages, within 30 days.

The process is based on researching data that allows for greater equity in the distribution of wealth, allocation of funds for access to housing, health, education, employment and basic sanitation.

This operation is mainly financed by the Angolan Executive and has technical assistance from international consultancies from Brazil, South Africa and Portugal, as well as financial support from the World Bank.

Pilot Census

It is the stage that serves as a basis for testing and verifying the capacity to collect information across the national territory, taking place from July to September last year in seven provinces, namely Luanda, Bengo, Lunda-Norte, Uíge, Bié, Cuando Cubango and Cunene.

In the census carried out in 2014, Angola had 25 million 789 thousand and 24 inhabitants, of which six million 945 thousand and 386 lived in the country’s capital.

The process revealed that the majority of the country’s population was made up of women, exactly 13 million 289 thousand 983, while men were 12 million 499 thousand 041.

The 2024 general census will be the second after national independence, third in the country’s history, after those carried out in 2014 and in the colonial period, in 1970.
