Preservation of the environment requires everyone's involvement - prosecutor

Africa-Press – Angola. The deputy attorney general of the Republic and head of Cuando Cubango, Nilton Muaca, defended today, Monday, the greater involvement of all citizens in preserving the environment and trying to repel all activities that prove harmful to it.

The magistrate advocated this involvement when he spoke at the opening of the legality week, under the motto “The Public Prosecutor’s Office and the protection of the environment, challenges and Perspectives”, in which the PGR will celebrate its 45th anniversary of its institutionalization, marking itself in the next 27th of the current month.

The deputy prosecutor said that there is an urgent need to look at the environment differently, having admitted that, in relation to environmental crimes, even without quantifying, the situation in Cuando Cubango is very worrying.

“There is a certain lethargy and slowness, for various reasons, in pursuing this type of process. The fight against environmental crimes, the protection of the environment itself is a task for all of us and we must commit ourselves to minimizing the effects caused by any activity that is harmful to the environment”, considered the deputy prosecutor

Nilton Muaca reported that there are a considerable number of cases on environmental crimes (illegal exploitation of wood of the Mussivi type, especially) in the preparatory investigation phase, which will, in the next few days, be introduced to the court for due judgment.

He recalled that Cuando Cubango is one of the largest wildlife conversation sanctuaries in Angola, as a large part of its territory is covered by national parks and environmental reserves, occupying a total area of ​​22 thousand 610 square kilometers.

He highlighted that the PGR has a preponderant role in the protection of the environment, through the Public Ministry, as the environment nowadays constitutes a global concern, which is why the adoption of the motto “The Public Ministry and the protection of the environment, challenges and perspectives”.

“The Public Prosecutor’s Office is constitutionally responsible for the procedural initiative of actions aimed at protecting the environment, with a view to preventing the environment from being harmed to the point of compromising fauna and flora”, stated the magistrate, highlighting that the protection of the environment and sustainable development are today one of the main concerns of the Angolan Executive.

On the occasion, Nilton Muaca made it known that, within the scope of combating crime in general, nine new magistrates should present themselves at Cuando Cubango and begin their activities soon in the municipalities of Cuchi and Cuito Cuanavale, thus reinforcing the current team of 11 magistrates and improve the dynamics of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

At the opening of legality week, held in the amphitheater at the government headquarters, the deputy governor for the political, social and economic sectors, Helena Chimena, considered important the participation of civil society in the arduous task of combating corruption, through complaints of irregular acts that violate the principles of equality, transparency, legality and good financial management.

For the vice-governor, the vandalization of public and private assets must deserve the strongest condemnation and repulsion from the entire society and the vigorous action of the justice bodies, for whom the fight against crime in general is the responsibility of all Angolans and of the family first, remembering that justice bodies are called to intervene to fulfill their role of re-educating and protecting society.

The activities scheduled for legality week include lectures, visits to the Missombo Preventive Prison Unit, the General Inspectorate of State Administration (IGAE), Southeast Military Region, municipal command of the National Police of Menongue, the Menongue Penitentiary Establishment, indoor football, among other activities.
