Angola wants to revive cooperation with Korea

Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, announced Tuesday, in Seoul, that he had presented to his Korean counterpart, Yoon Suk-Yeol, ideas and projects to revive bilateral cooperation, which had slowed down in the last years.

João Lourenço was speaking at the opening of official talks between delegations from the two countries, as part of his 48-hour state visit to South Korea.

The head of state recalled that there have been 31 years of exchanges at all levels, since the formalization of bilateral cooperation in 1993, with the signing of the General Cooperation Agreement.

He highlighted that, during this period, the two States carried out cooperation actions of “appreciable relevance”.

Despite this, he continued, “we are far short of everything we can do, taking into account the potential that our two countries have”.

Therefore, the statesman indicated that, in the one-on-one meeting he held with Yoon Suk-Yeol, he presented “a set of ideas and cooperation projects” that the two countries can develop, at the institutional level and with the Korean private business sector.

He declared that the dynamism and entrepreneurial capacity of Korean businesspeople “are widely known” for the transformative role they managed to play in the Korean economy, placing it at the level of the world’s major economies in just a few decades.

He explained that the main objective of his trip is to absorb the dynamics that boosted the development of South Korea and to be able to count on his collaboration to help Angola take firm and safe steps in building a solid economy.

According to President João Lourenço, Angola aims to build an economy capable of responding to the fundamental needs of the country’s population and integrating into the context of the world economy.

He expressed confidence that the new legal instruments that the two countries have just signed will help to increase and intensify contacts between Korean and Angolan public entities and between businessmen on both sides.

On the other hand, he expressed his satisfaction with the results of the contacts he maintained in Seoul, with the interest and sensitivity shown by the Korean side to issues relating to cooperation with the African continent.

On the occasion, he considered that this sensitivity will have its most significant and visible expression with the upcoming Korea-Africa summit, from which he said he hopes that a realistic and pragmatic framework for cooperation between the different African countries and Korea will emerge.
