Africa-Press – Angola. The 2nd Regional Meeting of African National Commissions for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), held from the 18th to the 21st of this month, established a roadmap for the future, guided by cooperation and sustainable development of Africa, was announced in Luanda.

According to the permanent secretary of the National Commission of Angola, Alexandre de Sousa Costa, this event was an opportunity for UNESCO to carry out the Regional Consultation carried out by the director-general, Audrey Azoulay, in the different regions, represented, in Luanda, by the deputy responsible for the Natural Sciences of the international organization, Lídia Brito.

Among the points on the agenda, the debates to strengthen the role and action of National Commissions in Member States and the contribution they have to the institution in defining priorities and action strategies stood out.

The consultation, continued the permanent secretary of the National Commission of Angola, also served to analyze the priorities of UNESCO’s budget program for the period 2026-2029.

Alexandre de Sousa Costa also said that the event provided a platform for the exchange of experiences and good practices between African countries, promoting greater cohesion and regional collaboration.

The validation of flagship programs and the signing of joint commitments, according to the permanent secretary, were highlights of the meeting, reflecting the spirit of cooperation and solidarity that permeated the discussions.

The active participation of more than 35 general and permanent secretaries from the African region, representatives of the different Ministerial and sectoral Departments, social partners and members of the Permanent Secretariat, he highlighted, were essential to the success of the 2nd edition of the meeting and the Regional Consultation from UNESCO. During the meeting, Alexandre de Sousa Costa led the listening and debate process on the crucial issues of the African National Commissions, embodied in the proposal presented by Angola, namely, the Regional Operational Plan.

The Regional Operational Plan is an instrument to support the Strategies of the Africa Priority Program and the African Union until 2063 and the Accra Declaration, with specific guidelines to be adopted by the African National Commissions and which will be the basis for action until 2026, when that the 3rd edition of the Regional Meeting of African National Commissions will be held in Equatorial Guinea.

The 3rd edition will be an opportunity to evaluate the progress made and adjust strategies. “We are confident that, with hard work and dedication from everyone involved, we will continue to move towards common objectives”, reinforced the permanent secretary of the Angolan National Commission for UNESCO.

In addition to the deputy director general, the activity was also witnessed by the president of the National Commission of Angola, Luísa Grilo, the country’s permanent delegate to UNESCO, Ana Maria de Oliveira, the directors of the Africa Priority Division, Mohamed Elfarnawaney , Regional and UNESCO representative for Central Africa in Yaoundé, Paul Coustére, and by senior officials and experts from the institution.
