Africa-Press – Angola. The Head of State of Timor-Leste, José Manuel Ramos-Horta, visited the Dr. António Agostinho Neto Memorial this Monday, where he paid tribute to the first President of Angola.

At the mausoleum, the Timorese statesman, who is making an official visit to Angola from Monday onwards, laid a wreath of flowers next to Agostinho Neto’s sarcophagus and enjoyed the photographic exhibition in his memory.

Speaking to the press, Ramos-Horta said that his visit to the memorial was one of the highlights of his stay in Angola, as it allowed him to “immerse himself” in the history and personality of the founder of the Angolan nation.

He said that being at the memorial allows one to learn about the story of Agostinho Neto, as well as the lessons he left for current and future generations.

The President of Timor-Leste also praised the construction of the space in honor of Neto, a work, in his opinion, very well planned and executed, which brings together the sarcophagus, the photographic exhibition and documents about the life of Agostinho Neto and his companions of fight.

He considered António Agostinho Neto “a great Angolan, African and world leader, whose lessons have great universality”.

The Dr. António Agostinho Neto Memorial (MAAN) is a monument built in honor of the first Angolan Head of State, and opened in 2012, with an area of 18 hectares.

It has a central block that contains the sarcophagus, where the remains of Agostinho Neto rest, the museum, the exhibition gallery, multipurpose rooms, administration, library/video library, multimedia library, documentation center, shops and authorities hall, adjacent to the outdoor presidential tribune.

The structure was inspired by Agostinho Neto’s poem “The Path of the Stars”.

After visiting the memorial, Ramos-Horta headed to the Presidential Palace, in Cidade Alta, where he was received by his counterpart João Lourenço. Subsequently, three agreements will be signed to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
