Africa-Press – Angola. The Head of State, João Lourenço, visited a rural products fair, on Wednesday, in the city of Cuito in his first activity on his work agenda to Bié province.

The statesman, who arrived this afternoon in this central/southern region of the country, visited the exhibition where products such as wheat, rice, beans, tubers, corn and coffee stand out, passing through the stands of the nine municipalities that make up the province.

The municipality of Camacupa, despite having rice as its main focus, began to take its first steps in wheat production.

In addition to these cereals, he also brought soybeans, massango, cassava, corn, beans, catfish and various vegetables.

Catabola, for example, which celebrates 61 years of existence on the 13th of this month, has also started to produce wheat, and is currently preparing 10 hectares on an experimental basis.

In addition to this product, this municipality, where beans are produced on a large scale, has 15 varieties of this product on display, as well as sesame and yellow and white corn.

The municipality of Andulo displays 16 varieties of beans, cassava, yams, coffee, soybeans, jinguba, corn, pineapple and various tubers.

According to Elisa da Graça, responsible for the stand, the municipality is also experimenting with the cultivation of wheat and rice, with the opening of a farm in 2022, which joined five other cooperatives dedicated to the sector.

In Nharêa, according to the head of the Agrarian Development Institute (IDA), Kamba Lussevikueno, despite the cultivation of beans being the focus of producers, they are also committed to the production of wheat and rice, in response to the Executive’s call, aimed at diversification of national production.

Cotton also returned to the spotlight. There is a producer who relaunched half a hectare production this year.

Cunhinga, strong in pineapple production, is showing the results applied in an experimental way in the production of wheat and rice.

In addition to grains, the municipality has displayed tomatoes, onions, cabbage, potatoes, beans and corn.

The village of Cuemba, a stronghold in honey production, is also focused on planting wheat, with the prospect of harvesting the first seven tons from five cultivated hectares in August.

To plant rice, just over 50 individual producers and two cooperatives are involved.

As for Chitembo, wheat cultivation has seen growth in almost all communes, according to the municipal director of Agriculture, Agostinho Epalanga. The grain has been produced for five years.

In this current 2023/2024 agricultural campaign, around 35 hectares were prepared for wheat planting in Chitembo alone.

To this end, 20 individual producers are engaged.

In addition to this, the municipality of Cuemba has several varieties of beans, corn and tubers on display.

It also has honey as a postcard, with an annual production of eight tons, sold mainly in the markets of Luanda, Huambo, Cuando Cubango and Benguela.

Cuito, which recently harvested 555 tons of rice for the first time, also has other varieties of products on display, with emphasis on wheat.

With an estimated population of two million inhabitants, the National Peasant Union in the province of Bié controls 1,536 associations and 523 cooperatives.
