The senior men’s national table tennis team, in the team speciality, failed to qualify for the quarter-finals, after losing 3 sets to 1, on Sunday, against Ethiopia, in a match corresponding to the third round of Group 4 of the African Championship that has been taking place since Saturday, at the Sport Academy Pavilion, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.After losing 3 sets to 0 in the second round against Tunisia, Angolan Délcio Cassule entered the first game determined to put the national team ahead and did so by beating the host Bireba Maregn 3 sets to 1. In the second match, Domingos Manuel ended Angola’s advantage and allowed table tennis player Dufera Mokonen to equalize 3 sets to 1.
With the mission of reestablishing the tie, Roberto Fabiano, in the third game, did not have a service level and lost, by 3 sets’ 1, against the Ethiopian Mindahun Melaku, thus putting Ethiopia in the advantage.
Délcio Cassule returned to the table, however he did not perform as well and was defeated by Dufera Mokonen, 3 sets to 0. Of the three matches played, Angola only managed to beat Sudan in the opening game, 3 sets to 0.
In the women’s competition, the National Team also failed to qualify for the quarter-finals. After winning the opening match against Algeria, 3 sets to 0, the Angolan team lost again, 3 sets to 0, against the Benin team in the second round of Group 4.
Angolan table tennis players will take to the stage tomorrow, Tuesday, in the mixed doubles and singles specialties.
